The End Of An Era
Feb. 6th, 2004 11:28 amYesterday, the design community lost one of its best, Disney legend John Hench.
A founding Imagineer, and an artist on such films as Fantasia, Dumbo, Cinderella, and Peter Pan, John Hench was an incredible influence on me and my generation of designers. I got a chance to meet him once, at a WDI event in Glendale sometime around 1997 -- shook hands with him, Marc Davis, and Ward Kimball while they all stood together and kibbitzed. For a theme park geek like me, it was like meeting the Pope, Jesus, and God all at once.
Mr. Davis and Mr. Kimball left us a few years ago, and with Mr. Hench's passing, I feel the same now as I did then. There wouldn't be a Disneyland -- or even a "theme park industry" -- without these guys.
