Here's why the internet is awesome.
About
three weeks ago, I posted about an amazing
steampunk-and-time-travel-themed horror show staged in a suburban garage by techy Brit twin brothers
Gavin & Jason Fox (with sinister Jack-the-Ripper help from their neighbor & longtime pal
Peter Robelou).
Their incredible "Engineer's View"
behind-the-scenes video quickly made the rounds through blogs like
Boing Boing,
The Escapist,
Dvorak, and
Nerdcore, and rightfully so -- it's staggeringly beautiful, ingenious and truly creepy to boot. Indeed, a piece of Nerd High Art of the awesomest degree.
I wrote a gushing fanboy letter to the lads via their
website, which turned into some friendly email chitchat about theme parks, their previous yearly Halloween attractions (collectively called "Fangoria", which are
all worth checking out), and our respective creative careers. Like true nerds, their horror shows are just a hobby (!) -- they also do some great
professional work and have a cool day job designing awesome stuff at
Poke London.
Lo and behold, they told me that they were planning a trip to the states just a few weeks later (part of an ongoing
documentary project they're doing about roadside attractions here in the states), and said they were interested in seeing some of the local Halloween events, Knott's in particular.
A few Tweets later, we
met up for dinner, proceeded to
get our Haunt on, and had a deliriously geeky night of hanging out, talking shop, and generally carrying on like we'd known each other forever. That's the way nerds roll -- we find people we "get" and who "get" us in return, and let the mind-melding commence!
It's also the best part of teh intarwebs -- getting the chance to meet and be inspired by people that, in an unconnected life, you would probably never have the chance to know. From email to reality, between London and Los Angeles, in three short weeks. It's kind of amazing, actually.
Thanks, guys! Safe travels back home across the pond, and here's to more geekery in the future!
