TRIP UPDATE
Aug. 11th, 2007 09:54 amVegas was tiring. It was a research trip and photo safari for me and my work team, some of whom hadn't seen the newer resorts of the last four or five years (Wynn, THEhotel, etc). We spent all day walking/cabbing from one casino to another, taking photos of design elements that interested us, occasionally stopping for cocktails. :)
Thursday evening after my co-workers had flown home, I met up with
rckdjbear &
genxcub for dinner, but knowing that I was on my way to California Extreme later in the weekend, they surprised me by first taking me to the Pinball Museum & Hall of Fame. Located about twenty minutes off the strip (and across the street from the Eagle), it's an unassuming strip-mall storefront that is a not-for-profit corporation displaying the world's largest pinball collection, all fully operational and available to play. Man, it's been a long time since I put a twenty into a change machine and filled my pockets with quarters (emptying them into the games just as quickly), and it was a great feeling to revisit.
Obviously owned by a diehard arcade nerd (who was there, lovingly maintaining the machines and always up for friendly conversation about them), it was a really wonderful collection, with an equal share of favorites (Black Knight! Pinbot! Haunted House! Elvira! Addams Family!) and obscure rarities (Barb Wire!, Impacto!, Punk!, Rondeevoo!, Hyperball!). Easily my favorite new Vegas attraction. Well worth the visit even if you aren't a diehard pinball nerd -- just a really fun place with a really good vibe. I took a bunch of photos and video, and will probably upload them later today.
Friday I flew into OAK, got my rental car, drove into The City for the day, having a quick lunch with
danceterian and taking
profkampf for a bit of shopping (was hoping to visit with
poohbearjim, but he was napping pretty fiercely). Met up with
grumblor &
3dollarbilly after they finished work, met their adorable-yet-manipulative dalmation Sobey, and went for a really awesome dinner at Regalito.
Slept in a bit later than I'd planned this morning, but should be on my way to San Jose soon.
