DO SOMETHING MANLY
Feb. 7th, 2007 10:54 amAm I the only gay person who thinks the brouhaha over the Snickers Super Bowl Ad is completely dumb and unnecessary?
I kinda find the idea of two straight guys kissing accidentally because they're too enamored with a candy bar as kind of hilarious. One of the alternate endings (which seem to have been taken down everywhere) is even funnier, with an equally grungy third straight guy inquiring about a three-way.
Uh, straight people don't have to like watching us kiss, folks. In fact, if straight people were made uncomfortable by the commercial because it shows two guys kissing -- then great, let 'em be uncomfortable.
In comparison, there was an episode of Ugly Betty on last week where a gay character recoils at the idea of kissing a girl, even claiming mental scarring and a need for therapy at the simple act of flirting with her. Were straight folks up in arms? Hardly.
I'd much prefer that GLAAD spend what little airtime they get exposing the real bigots and hypocrites who spew far worse venom every day than hit an easy target like football players reacting to the commercial in a locker room.
EDIT/UPDATE - I hadn't seen *all* of the alternate web-only endings, a few of which seem to resort to violence when the Snickers-eating straights think they might be gay. Which, agreed, is bad. But I can't seem to find those endings -- if anyone finds them, let me know.
