A MOVIE AND A BOOK

The idea of "Raymond Chandler set in an O.C. high school" sounds like a ludicrous gimmick -- but it ends up working really well, and not merely as homage (and certainly not as parody). It loves all the trappings of film noir (especially the language), but is willing to mash it all up with contemporary teen culture and make it into something you've never seen before. Incredibly watchable and re-watchable.
