The script is a pamphlet. Instead of attempting to make the original's character development less wooden, the remake simply considers it a nuisance, removing it entirely. Seriously, the movie is eight minutes of character exposition, and seventy-two minutes of lots of people drowning or blowing up or being crushed in spectacular, gleefully brutal ways.
It's basically Titanic meets The Abyss, with a pinch of Final Destination -- it's not about "how will they survive this?" so much as "who's going to bite it next?"
But as far as Big Dumb Fun(TM) goes, it's a hoot. It's sort of exactly what you expect (and, in my case, hoped) it will be.
