MAIA SHARP
Aug. 4th, 2005 02:46 pmYou all need to go out and buy the new album, Fine Upstanding Citizen, from my pal Maia Sharp.

Co-produced by Maia and Brad Jones (Butterfly Boucher, Jill Sobule), the new album features tracks co-written with Kim Richey, Imani Coppola and Steve Poltz. It also features Maia's own version of A Home, the title song she wrote for the Dixie Chicks’ multi-platinum album.
So far, my favorite track is either A Reminder or Fall Like Margarite, with the title track a very close second. It's an awesome listen -- my iPod has been stuck on it for over a week now.
I've known Maia since fourth grade; she was always playing some sort of instrument, and I remember that her dad Randy wrote songs for Dolly Parton, Crystal Gayle, Emmy Lou Harris, and Alabama. Miles Copeland produced her first album, the well-reviewed Hardly Glamour. Unfortunately, her follow-up, Tinderbox, never saw the light of day due to a record company merger. She finally got a second break in 2002 with a self-titled follow-up, containing a number of lost songs from Tinderbox (my favorite being Willing to Burn).
She's written and performed with a ton of other artists, too -- Carol King, Art Garfunkel, Jules Shear, Lisa Loeb, Richard Thompson, Patty Griffin, Dar Williams -- even Cher has recorded one of her songs (Don't Come Around Tonight). This year, she's touring with Bonnie Raitt and has collaborated on three songs on her upcoming album, and also has a song on the new Trisha Yearwood album, both due out in September.
If you're in SF, she'll be performing at the Great American Music Hall on Thursady night 8/11 (with Raul Midon). And I'll definitely be going to see her here in LA at the Wiltern in November with Bonnie Raitt.
She's a great gal, and a wonderful songwriter with a beautiful, tear-soaked alto voice. Give her a listen -- if you're at all into the whole singer/songwriter scene, she'll be right up your alley.
