Netflix Night
Mar. 4th, 2004 11:01 pmCatching up on a few DVDs that have been languishing on our shelf.
As much as I miss my dear
fidgetcub (who made it up to The Pas safe and sound, by the way -- been chatting with him on the phone at his family's house on and off for the past few days), you can be that every time he goes on a trip, I spend the nights at our pad catching up on DVDs.
Although there's plenty of TiVo and videogames that we enjoy together, I rarely get the home theater to myself for any extended period, and he's not much of a home-movie fan. I think this has to do with his short (but cute) attention span -- he's fine when going to the cinemas for a flick, but at home, there's too many distractions, so he ferrets every time I pop a DVD in.
Ahhh. Blissful evening of three DVDs in a row. :) First up was Kurt Russell in BREAKDOWN, which I've had checked out for *months* on Netflix. That's the one thing I love about Netflix -- I spend a few minutes every week just browsing and adding stuff that I've always wanted to see, and then forget about it. POOF, a few weeks later, it shows up. Very handy, and adds a Christmas-like vibe to my daily mail check.
Always wanted to see BREAKDOWN, as I'd heard it was pretty good for a low-budget thriller. It lived up to that very well indeed -- no real surprises, as it's crafted like an episode of COLUMBO, you know who the bad guys are at the outset, pretty much -- it's how they get it in the end that is satisfying. The last third is really well-made, good performances by JT Walsh and (briefly) Kathleen Quinlan. Script is tight and brisk. Better than expected.
Next up is a live concert DVD with Paul Carrack -- I've always adored his voice, so the concert is playing while I type. His last couple of albums are middle-of-the-road Adult-Contemporary-Jazzy crap, but he sings awful pretty. I'm a sucker for his blue-eyed soul voice, and he's thrown in a few well-known nuggets from Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics to appease the crowd. And he's getting *way* cute to boot, in that middle-aged pasty brit kinda way (think Bob Hoskins or Phil Collins... mmmmm). Plus, there's always the blokey accent to enjoy when he's talking between songs. Yum.
Next up in a few minutes, WINGED MIGRATION, which looks like a perfect DVD to enjoy whilst drifting off to sleep...
